Stephen N. Abel, D.D.S., M.S.D. currently serves as Associate Dean for Extramural and Public Health Programming at Nova Southeastern University College of Dental Medicine. Prior to this he served as the Oral Health Liaison for the New York State Department of Health AIDS Institute.
About
Stephen N. Abel, D.D.S., M.S.D. joined the dental faculty of Nova Southeastern University College of Dental Medicine in 2004 and currently serves as Associate Dean for Extramural and Public Health Programming. Dr. Abel also serves as Principal Investigator of several HRSA –sponsored grants addressing the training needs of dental students and improving access to care for special populations including those with developmental disabilities and infectious diseases.
In 1990 Dr. Abel was appointed as the first full time dental director of the Spellman Dental Clinic in New York City, the first and largest HIV dedicated dental clinics in the United States. He served on President Clinton’s Advisory Council on HIV/AIDS from 1996-2000. Through his career in New York, Dr. Abel has served as a consultant to numerous federal and state agencies devoted to improving access to care for underserved populations.
Dr. Abel received his BA degree in Biology from Harvard University and DDS from the New York University College of Dentistry. He completed a general dental practice dental residency at the Eastman Dental Center in Rochester, New York and was awarded a MS in Periodontology from the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry.
