Stephen N. Abel, DDS, MSD serves as Associate Dean for Student, Community and Professional Initiatives at the University at Buffalo School of Dental Medicine. Dr. Abel has served as Principal Investigator of several HRSA-sponsored grants addressing the training needs of dental students and improving access to care for special populations including those with developmental disabilities, victims of domestic violence and persons living with infectious diseases. His current area of research is centered on dentists’ attitudes regarding chairside medical screenings.

In 1990 Dr. Abel was appointed as the first full time dental director of the Spellman Dental Clinic in New York City, the first and largest HIV dedicated dental clinic in the United States. He served on President Clinton’s Advisory Council on HIV/AIDS from 1996-2000. Through his career in New York, Dr. Abel has served as a consultant to numerous federal and state agencies devoted to improving access to care for underserved populations.

Dr. Abel received his BA degree in Biology from Harvard University and DDS from the New York University College of Dentistry. He completed a general dental practice residency at the Eastman Dental Center in Rochester, New York and was awarded a MS in Periodontology from the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry.
