Robert J. Chaponis, PharmD, RPh, is Senior Medical Director of Scientific Engagement at GlaxoSmithKline Consumer Healthcare. In this capacity, Dr. Chaponis provides strategic direction for external scientific engagement with healthcare professionals. He previously served at the company as the Medical Affairs Lead for the Americas Region with responsibility for product stewardship and developing and executing the regional medical affairs strategy for the product portfolio.
Robert’s career in the pharmaceutical industry has encompassed both Rx and OTC drug development experience and the application of outcomes research to evaluate the real-world effectiveness of medicines across several therapeutic categories, including pediatric and geriatric populations. Robert joined GSK Consumer Healthcare in 2015 following the joint venture with Novartis Consumer Health. Having spent 8 years at Novartis, he led the US Medical Affairs Team and was previously the Head of Global Medical Affairs. Before joining Novartis, Robert held a variety of medical affairs and clinical research leadership positions for the Rx side of Pfizer Pharmaceuticals, Pharmacia Corporation, and Schering-Plough Corporation. In addition, he has worked on the consultant side of geriatric medicine, bringing new innovations to the conduct of research, disease management, medical information, and continuing medical education.
Robert holds a Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) degree from Shenandoah University and a BS degree of Pharmacy from Temple University. As a licensed pharmacist, he is trained in geriatric pharmaceutical care and is a member of the Corporate Advisory Panel of the Gerontological Society of America (GSA), the American Society of Consultant Pharmacists (ASCP), and a board member and faculty member of the Pharmaceutical Education & Research Institute (PERI).
