Oral Cancer Awareness Month 
April is Oral Cancer Awareness Month, an annual initiative to promote the prevention and early detection of these cancers. Oral cancer accounts for approximately three percent of all cancers diagnosed each year in the United States, and it is anticipated that about 58,500 Americans will be newly diagnosed with oral cancer in 2024.
Esophageal Cancer Awareness Month
During Esophageal Cancer Awareness Month, we are encouraged to help spread information about esophageal cancer. 
Although esophageal cancer is considered a rare disease, more people die each year from this cancer than from melanoma, skin cancer, or cervical cancer. Esophageal cancer is often diagnosed later than other cancers, so it is important to help patients understand its risk factors.

Oral Health Is Essential to Veteran Productivity and Well-Being
Nearly 600,000 veterans reported productivity loss in the past year due to oral health problems, according to a report from CareQuest Institute and the American Institute of Dental Public Health. The report finds that lack of access to dental care leads to significant losses in productivity time and money for veterans and their employers.
Maybe It’s Time to Advance Dentists as Primary Care Providers
With a better understanding of the oral-systemic link, reorienting dental education to better integrate dentistry into primary healthcare could lead to better health outcomes. A study that is being published in the June issue (Volume 45) of the Journal of Dentistry examines the need to enhance dental education to graduate dentists who embrace an expanded role as primary care providers.

Santa Fe Group Secures Grant From CareQuest Institute to Launch Coalition to Advocate for Oral Health Care Policy Reform
CareQuest Institute for Oral Health has awarded a grant of $125,000 to the Santa Fe Group to establish a center to identify key issues facing the dental profession, prepare policy statements, and develop advocacy strategies to inform key partners about these important topics. The Coalition for Oral Health Policy (COHP), a nonpartisan group of high-impact individuals and organizations, aims to increase equity and access in oral health care across the United States through policy reform.
Nader Nadershahi Reappointed to the California Health Workforce Education and Training Council
On March 13, Nader Nadershahi, D.D.S, M.B.A., Ed.D., Dean of the University of the Pacific Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry, was reappointed by California governor Gavin Newsom to the California Health Workforce Education and Training Council, an appointment that Dr. Nadershahi has held since 2021.
Dr. Judith Haber Appointed to Healthy Smiles, Healthy Hearts™ Initiative
OHNEP Executive Director Judith Haber, Ph.D., A.P.R.N., F.A.A.N., has been appointed to the National Scientific Advisory Group of the American Heart Association’s Healthy Smiles, Healthy Hearts™ initiative, funded by and developed in collaboration with Delta Dental. This $14,000,000 project aims to improve the oral health and total health of patients nationwide by expanding access to equitable, integrated health care, as well as advance efforts to educate clinicians and patients on the connection between heart health and oral health.
