Handwashing Awareness Week - December 1-7, 2024

National Handwashing Awareness Week is a significant public health initiative that aims to raise awareness about the importance of handwashing in preventing the spread of germs and illness. This year, the week is observed from December 1 to 7, 2024.

Championing Minimally Invasive Care: Aligning Advocacy to Transform Oral Health

This white paper, developed by an ad-hoc group of dental public health, communication, advocacy, and evaluation experts, and funded by the CareQuest Institute for Oral Health, provides guidance to enable champions of minimally invasive care to efficiently advocate to relevant audiences.

Primary care is the central component of a high-functioning and equitable health system. However, there is a shortage of primary care clinicians, and the time required to complete all recommended prevention services and counseling for a typical primary care panel is prohibitive.

Inclusion of Dental Services in Medicare to Improve Oral and General Health for Older Americans

Poor oral health negatively impacts overall health, quality of life, and well-being. Increasing evidence suggests that provision of basic dental care for elderly Americans would improve outcomes for a variety of systemic diseases and reduce the overall cost of healthcare. As a result, recent changes have been implemented to include some dental benefits in the Medicare program.

A novel approach

A consortium of supportive organizations, including almost 250 members, was assembled to disseminate evidence to support the addition of oral health care in Medicare when deemed medically necessary. At the same time, a new, smaller, and more focused group—the Coalition for Oral Health Policy, a subsidiary of The Santa Fe Group—was formed to more broadly promote the inclusion of oral health care coverage within Medicare.
