Making the Case for Interprofessional Education and Practice Collaboration to Address Rising Rates of HPV-Associated Oropharyngeal Cancers
According to a recent report of the CDC, oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma is currently the most common HPV-associated cancer in the United States. Patient awareness about HPV cancer risk remains low, however—and while dental professionals are among those most likely to identify signs and symptoms of oral HPV, studies have found that few discuss HPV risk with their patients.
In a perspective article published in the January 2022 issue of the Journal of Dental Education, Judith Haber and colleagues describe the barriers and opportunities for oral healthcare professionals to benefit from professional development programs, coaching, and other resources to help them in educating patients on HPV prevention and treatment.
