Welcome to April: Advancing Prevention, Equity, and Integrated Care
April brings a meaningful opportunity to highlight the critical role of prevention, early detection, and whole-person care in improving oral and overall health. Several national observances this month align closely with the Santa Fe Group’s mission to advance health integration, access, and equity across systems.
Oral Cancer Awareness Month
April is recognized as Oral Cancer Awareness Month, a time to raise awareness about the importance of early detection and prevention of oral and oropharyngeal cancers. Regular dental visits play a vital role in identifying early signs, improving outcomes, and saving lives.
National Minority Health Month
April is also National Minority Health Month, which focuses on advancing health equity and improving the health of racial and ethnic minority populations. Addressing disparities in oral health access and outcomes remains a critical component of broader efforts to achieve integrated, person-centered care.
National Public Health Week (April 6–12, 2026)
National Public Health Week highlights the importance of public health systems and prevention strategies in improving community health. Oral health is a key component of overall health, and continued collaboration between dental and medical professionals is essential to advancing integrated care.
World Health Day (April 7)
Celebrated globally on April 7, World Health Day focuses on priority health issues affecting populations worldwide. This year’s theme emphasizes strengthening health systems and expanding access to care—principles that closely align with efforts to integrate oral health into broader healthcare delivery. “Together for health. Stand with science.”
As we move through April, these observances serve as a reminder of the importance of prevention, early intervention, equity, and cross-sector collaboration. By continuing to elevate oral health as an essential part of overall health, we can help drive meaningful progress toward more integrated and equitable systems of care.
