June: Advancing Oral Health Across the Lifespan
June provides an opportunity to recognize the importance of oral health as an essential component of overall health and well-being. This month also includes several observances that highlight issues closely connected to the work of the Santa Fe Group, including Men’s Health Month, Alzheimer’s & Brain Awareness Month, Father’s Day, and World Elder Abuse Awareness Day.
From childhood through older adulthood, oral health influences nutrition, communication, quality of life, and the prevention and management of chronic disease. Research continues to strengthen our understanding of the connections between oral health and conditions such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and cognitive decline, while advances in prevention, minimally invasive dentistry, artificial intelligence, and integrated care models are creating new opportunities to improve health outcomes.
Men’s Health Month serves as a reminder that preventive care, including regular dental visits, plays an important role in maintaining overall health. June also includes Father’s Day, an opportunity to recognize fathers, grandfathers, mentors, and caregivers whose health and well-being contribute to stronger families and communities. Encouraging preventive care and healthy aging benefits not only individuals, but also the families and support networks that depend on them.
June’s recognition of Alzheimer’s & Brain Awareness Month highlights the growing interest in understanding the relationship between oral health, inflammation, and healthy aging. Likewise, World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (June 15) calls attention to the importance of protecting the health, dignity, and quality of life of older adults, including access to essential oral health services.
Throughout the year, Santa Fe Group members work collaboratively across disciplines to address healthy aging, workforce development, health integration, technology innovation, access to care, and population health. These efforts reflect a shared commitment to ensuring that oral health remains an essential part of the broader health conversation.
As we enter the summer months, June serves as a reminder that prevention, early intervention, and collaboration remain among the most powerful tools for improving health and well-being across the lifespan.
