Innovation Center to Develop Solutions in Oral Health

Center for Innovation & Precision Dentistry Launched at UPenn

On January 22, the Center for Innovation & Precision Dentistry (CiPD) was launched with a virtual program that included participants from the NIDCR and the AADR/IADR, underscoring the importance of interdisciplinary programs for the future of oral health care.

The CiPD unites the efforts of Penn Dental Medicine and Penn’s School of Engineering and Applied Sciences to accelerate development of new approaches to oral health. This collaboration will facilitate cutting-edge research and technologies to address unmet needs, while training the next generation of leaders in oral health care innovation.

Codirector Dr. Michel Koo, Professor in the Department of Orthodontics and Divisions of Community Oral Health and Pediatric Dentistry, explained the goals of the collaboration: “There is an urgent need to find better ways to diagnose, prevent, and treat these conditions, particularly in ways that are affordable and accessible for the most susceptible populations. That is our driving force for putting this Center together. . . . We want to challenge the status quo and generate the knowledge and new solutions that will benefit the society and improve oral health care.”
