March: Honoring the Oral Health Workforce and Advancing Global Impact

March is a month of recognition, reflection, and renewed commitment across the oral health community.

We begin the month by celebrating Dental Assistants Recognition Week, a time to acknowledge the essential role dental assistants play in delivering high quality, patient-centered care. Dental assistants support clinical procedures, strengthen infection prevention practices, enhance patient education, and improve practice efficiency. Learn more about this national observance through the American Dental Assistants Association.

On March 6, we recognize National Dentist Day. Dentists serve as leaders in prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and advocacy. Beyond clinical care, dentists contribute to advancing research, shaping policy, mentoring the next generation of professionals, and strengthening community health systems. The American Dental Association continues to support efforts that elevate the profession and expand access to care.

Later this month, on March 20, the global community observes World Oral Health Day, led by the FDI World Dental Federation. This international campaign highlights the importance of oral health as a fundamental component of overall health and well-being. According to the World Health Organization Global Oral Health Status Report, oral diseases remain among the most common chronic conditions worldwide, reinforcing the need for strong workforce models and integrated health systems.

The Santa Fe Group continues to emphasize whole person health and the integration of oral health within broader health policy and delivery systems. Recognizing the dental workforce is not only about appreciation. It is about understanding the critical role each member of the dental team plays in improving access, equity, and outcomes.
