Improving Oral Health During Pregnancy: A Call to Action
Improving the health and wellness of all children begins with comprehensive prenatal care and optimal oral health during pregnancy. In 2000, the Surgeon General’s report, Oral Health in America, highlighted the relationship of oral health to pregnancy outcomes—yet more than 20 years later, oral healthcare remains inaccessible for many pregnant women.
In an article published in the March/April 2022 issue of Journal of Midwifery & Women’s Health, Judith Haber and colleagues discuss the imperative for expanded dental benefit coverage for pregnant women, as well as the role that midwives can play to advocate for increased oral healthcare access during pregnancy.
