In Loving Memory: Dr. Mike C. Alfano

With heavy hearts, we share the passing of Dr. Michael C. Alfano, a visionary leader, dedicated educator, and the last living Founder of the Santa Fe Group. Mike passed away peacefully on Monday, July 28, 2025.

Throughout his remarkable career, Mike served as Professor, Dean, and Executive Vice President at New York University, shaping generations of healthcare professionals with his insight, discipline, and commitment to public health. He co-founded the Santa Fe Group alongside Drs. Arthur Dugoni, Lawrence Meskin, Harold Slavkin, and Dominick DePaola. These five titans of the profession are now together again, and the legacy they built continues to live on in our mission and in all of us who had the privilege to work alongside them.

Mike’s fierce intellect was matched only by his compassion. He approached every endeavor with curiosity and courage, including his personal battle with cancer, which he faced with remarkable grace. His belief in science, community, and the power of ideas made him a leader who did more than inspire. He helped transform the future of health care.

As we mourn his passing, we also celebrate his life and the profound impact he had on so many. We remain committed to carrying forward the vision he and the other founders championed: a more equitable, accessible, and collaborative future for health and health care.

May his memory continue to guide and inspire us.
