Early Action, Better Outcomes: Connecting Oral Health and Whole-Person Care

November brings several health observances that emphasize the importance of early detection, prevention, and coordinated care. American Diabetes Month, World Diabetes Day, Mouth Cancer Action Month, TMJ Awareness Month, and National Flossing Day each highlight different aspects of health, but together they reinforce the value of recognizing health concerns early, supporting informed decisions, and strengthening connections across healthcare.

American Diabetes Month places attention on diabetes awareness, prevention, and the importance of helping individuals manage their health. The relationship between diabetes and oral health is especially significant. Diabetes can increase the risk and severity of periodontal disease, while periodontal inflammation can complicate blood glucose management. These connections underscore the importance of including oral healthcare in comprehensive approaches to chronic disease prevention and management.

That message is reinforced by World Diabetes Day on November 14, which introduces the 2026–2027 theme, Early Action on Diabetes. The campaign emphasizes early diagnosis, risk reduction, and timely access to care. Its focus extends beyond individual behaviors to the importance of healthcare systems that support screening, communication, prevention, and coordinated treatment. Oral healthcare professionals can contribute to these efforts by recognizing potential concerns, educating patients, and encouraging appropriate follow-up across healthcare disciplines.

Mouth Cancer Action Month, observed throughout November and led by the United Kingdom’s Oral Health Foundation, similarly emphasizes the importance of recognizing warning signs and seeking timely evaluation. Its 2026 campaign, Change is your sign: Remove the doubt, get checked out, encourages individuals to pay attention to unusual changes in their mouths. Blue Wednesday on November 18 offers an additional opportunity to raise awareness about early detection, prevention, and the importance of regular oral health examinations.

Other November observances highlight how oral health affects everyday well-being. TMJ Awareness Month draws attention to temporomandibular disorders and their potential effects on pain, jaw function, eating, speaking, and quality of life. National Flossing Day on November 27 provides a reminder of the importance of daily preventive practices and maintaining healthy teeth and gums. Together, these observances demonstrate that oral health encompasses far more than the treatment of dental disease. It contributes to comfort, function, prevention, and overall quality of life.

These themes closely align with the Santa Fe Group’s ongoing efforts to advance oral health as an essential component of overall health and well-being. Building on discussions from the 2026 National Convening, Oral Health as a Pathway to Wellness and Longevity, the Santa Fe Group continues to explore opportunities to strengthen prevention, improve integration across healthcare, and support approaches that place individuals and communities at the center of care.

The Santa Fe Group’s recently released 2026 Progress Report, Consensus Statement, and Prototype Library reflect this continuing work, highlighting opportunities to move from discussion toward practical strategies, collaboration, and meaningful change.

As we recognize these observances throughout November, they offer a shared reminder that improving health requires more than responding to illness. It also means identifying risks early, connecting people with appropriate care, and building systems that recognize the relationships between oral health and whole-person well-being. By strengthening prevention, early action, and collaboration, we can help create a more connected approach to better health.
